Battle of Woodbury Common

January 21, 2023
from 5:00 pm

Which race? See below..

Battle of Woodbury starts at Bicton. There’s a bit of tarmac at the start but then it’s onto Woodbury Common. There are climbs but nothing too steep so it’s all runnable.
Most of the course is on sandy soil & well drained. You may encounter some mud but no bog. The 5k has is about 3K on tarmac but on very quiet back lanes where you’re unlikely to come across a car. It also has a couple of great off-road sections.
This year our half marathon is two laps of the 10k course, but because you’re running it in the dark lap two will seem just as unfamiliar!

There’s also a Canicross race to give people the chance to run with their dogs. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see a video of the 2019 Canicross start!

This venue is ideal for kids too so we’ve added kids races taking place at 5pm. There’s a 1k for under 8’s and a 2k for children 8-11. For all kids races you are welcome to run with your children at no additional charge.

You’ll need a head or chest torch and a pair of running shoes.

Parking & Directions

Google Maps tends to take you down narrow lanes & through the narrow back entrance straight into the path of runners. The best way to avoid this is to install the free What3Words app on your phone & use the location https://w3w.co/torched.broth.earpiece with google maps. It’s a  spot on the main drive & should ensure you arrive at the main entrance.
At the top of the drive the main car park is on your right.

Awards & Medals

All entries will get a finishers medal plus special podium medals & prizes.

What kit do I need for a night run?

We recommend trail shoes for all our night runs. You should also wear a hi-viz top or vest so you can be seen on any road sections or crossings. Bring warm clothing to change into afterwards. And of course you'll need a suitable head or chest torch.

How environmentally friendly are you?

We're doing our best to minimise our environmental impact. Here are a few of our initiatives. Trees Not Tees For all the events where we include a t-shirt, we're now offering the option to plant a tree instead. We've partnered with Treesnottees.com to make this happen. Avoiding Single Use Plastics For 2022 we have sourced new paper cups designed to be fully recycled back into high grade paper. They look and feel exactly the same as conventional plastic coated, or PLA coated cups - The key difference is that these cups are actually optimised to be recycled back into high grade paper using conventional paper recycling equipment [Paper mills do not need to change or invest in new machinery]. This supports a circular economy where the valuable cup paper fibre can be recycled many times. We are also looking at going fully cup less on some of our longer events - watch this space.. Our cycling events are already largely cup less. Zip Ties & waste We use reusable zip ties where ever possible. We minimise our use of disposable plastic and sort rubbish from our events into the relevant categories for recycling. Reducing Car use In Devon where most of our events take place this is easier said than done. However at our Burrator 10K running race we offer a £5 discount to anyone who commits to walking or cycling to the event. We'll be looking to add this to other events in the future where feasible.

Do I need a headtorch?

For our night runs you need a suitable headtorch. Chest mounted torches are also acceptable.

Can I get a refund or defer my registration to next year?

Sorry, we are not able to offer refunds as we start to incur costs as soon as we announce an event. However we now offer free name changes up to 7 days before an event with our booking software Eventrac. Just scroll to the bottom of your email receipt and click the link which says  'online receipt'. You will then see options to transfer your entry. Event Deferrals There is also the option on the 'online receipt'  to transfer your entry to a different event, provided you contact us a minimum of 7 days before the event and subject to an admin fee of £8 plus any difference in price

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

Organisers reserve the right to change, shorten or even cancel the races  in the event of extreme bad weather. However we will do all we can to go ahead and so far we have never cancelled a triathlon or duathlon (despite some challenging conditions)

Just as challenging and horrendous as I remember last year's one being. Big thanks to the marshals, especially the feed station, the water, jelly babies and bit of conversation were much needed at the start of the second loop for the half marathon.
