The Taunton Flyer will be taking place from Smeatharpe Airfield near Honiton. The event supports SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity and is themed around the wartime airfields of East Devon and Somerset, with routes that pass RAF Exeter (Exeter Airport), RAF DunkeswellRAF Upottery (Smeatharpe) RAF CulmheadRAF Merryfield, and RAF Westonzoyland

This popular early season sportive, offers a mixture of open, flowing, flat roads combined with a couple of testing climes in the Blackdown Hills (an area of outstanding natural beauty). The Taunton Flyer offers you a choise of three routes, the Spitfire (37 miles), the Dakota (63 miles) or the Wellington (101 miles). All routes are fully signed and supported with  quality feed station, outriders, mechanics and medics. The Sportive includes electronic chip timing providing you with an official completion time, plus a finishers medal.

We are taking this event over from Just Events who has run it successfully for a number of years.

.There is plenty of parking at Smeatharpe airfield included with your entry fee.


The route is fully marked with arrows. However we also recommend you download the route to your Garmin or other similar device as a back up.

What is better about a road bike?

Road bikes, as the name suggests, are designed for use on the road. They typically have a more aggressive, more aerodynamic position, dropped handlebars and smooth relatively narrow tyres. A gravel bike fitted with slick (ie smooth tyres) will be almost as good. A chunkier full-suspension mountain bike with knobbly tyres will slow you down considerably.

Do I need a specific type of bike?

No any roadworthy bike will do apart from electric bikes or tandems. We recommend using a road bike.

Can I use Tri bars (aerobars)

No these are not permitted as they can be dangerous if your riding in bunch or small group.

Will there be timing chips?

Yes, timing chips are mounted on the back of your race numbers. These need to be attached, the zip ties we provide, to the front of your bike. Please ensure, as far as you can, that the number is not covered up by cables, bags or anything else.

Are there any age restrictions on your sportives?

Yes there are. You need to be 15 or over to take part in any of the sportives unaccompanied. Age guidelines for the various events & distances are on the individual event pages.

Do I need to be a member of a club to enter?

No, all our events are open to all whether you're a member of a club or not.

Can I get a refund or defer my registration to next year?

Sorry, we are not able to offer refunds except to people who volunteer to help marshal at one of our events. However we now offer free name changes with our new booking software Eventrac. Just scroll to the bottom of your email receipt and click the link which says  'online receipt'. You will then see options to transfer your entry. We are also happy to transfer your entry to a different event for a charge of £8 (£5 for under 16s) provided you contact us a minimum of 7 days before the date of the event.
