The fourth Dartington Duathlon on Sunday 26th October 2014 was also our first over the ‘Standard’ distance of 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run. Competitors enjoyed near perfect conditions for a duathlon with a temperature of around 12 degrees and no wind or rain.
Veteran Peter Waumsley built up an early lead in Run 1 and already had a decent gap at the 5k mark to finish with the best 10k run split of 34:59. But come the bike leg it was the turn of the strongest cyclists to turn on the power. Adam Gitlin managed the best bike split of the day. His time of 1:08:38 was an average speed of nearly 22mph across the hilly 40km course. Gittins entered T2 10 seconds ahead of eventual winner Jonas Gummesson. But 35 year old Gummeson managed to close Gittins down and got through the final tough run in under 22 minutes to take the senior men’s competition by over 30 seconds from veterans Adam Gittin in 2nd place and Gary Vernon in 3rd. Early leader Peter Waumsley of Tamar Trotters eventually finished in 6th place overall and 4th Vet, pushed off the vets podium by Jon Parkinson who combined the only other sub-36 minute 10k with some strong cycling.
Richard Carter was the winner of the over 50s men in 2:22:04. And 60 year old Dave Hamilton won the vintage category by over 6 minutes with 2:52:16.
In the women’s race the three leading veteran women all finished faster than the three leading senior women showing that experience counts for something!
Eventual women’s winner and vet Maria Powell was over a minute down on the early leader Helen Dyke at the end of the first run as Helen powered through the hilly 10k in a very rapid 39:25. But come the bike leg and it was Maria’s turn to shine with a superfast 1:16:08 for the 40k bike leg. She entered T2 with a 3 minute lead over eventual second place Debbie Starkey and her final 5k run of 24:36 held onto that lead. First Senior Lady, Kathleen Dreifke was a further 12 minutes back in 2:47:16.
First Supervet lady was Angie brothers. She started with an excellent 46:27 for the 10k Run 1 and finished in 2:55:49. Penny Clapham was first home in the women’s vintage category in comfortably under 4 hours.
