Competitors these days expect high quality timing but the cost of timing can be high. We usually pay £1500+ to get our triathlons timed. For smaller events, such as many trail races & mountain bike events, this is prohibitive.

So in 2019 we started to upgrade our existing timing kit, previously used to time our night trail races, to RFID chip timing. This is the technology used by major events ranging from the London Marathon to triathlon World Cup races.

We are now able to offer our race timing services to other race organisers at very competitive prices. All our timing is based around Webscorer software. This is a very flexible timing system that allows RFID chip timing, NFC chip timing or fully manual timing using mobile phones, tablets or laptops. In these post-Covid times it also has the big advantage of being able to email results direct to competitors immediately after they finish. We also offer live results that competitors and their supporters can access from their mobile phones with no need to crowd around the timing tent!

Event Timing Technologies

RFID Chip Timing Technology

RFID has the advantage that many chips can be read virtually simultaneously from a distance of up to several metres. It’s perfect for events with a lot of competitors finishing simultaneously or for events based on multiple laps such as Cross Country mountain bike races or Cyclocross races.
Pros: Scalable up to huge events, disposable tags can be used for larger events, reliable instant results
Cons: More expensive, particularly for small events & more complicated. Requires a fairly skilful operator to set up & run.

NFC Chip Timing Technology

NFC (near field communication) timing is the technology used when you make a payment with your mobile phone.
Pros: Low cost, robust lightweight equipment that will run all day on small batteries. Ideal for events with multiple checkpoints including unmanned checkpoints.
Cons: chips need to be right next to the reader so not suitable for multi-lap bike races or races with a lot of people finishing simultaneously.
